Twitter owner, Elon Musk is reportedly developing an artificial intelligence (AI) start-up that will compete with OpenAI, the creator of the ChatGPT language model. A report by Financial Times stated that Musk is seeking to recruit engineers, attract investors and acquire the necessary chips for the development of a large language model. The report added that he is in talks with investors in SpaceX and Tesla to provide funding for his new venture.

In addition, Musk is putting together a team of AI researchers and engineers. Earlier this year, he was part of a group of industry executives and AI experts that called for a six-month moratorium on developing AI systems that are more powerful than OpenAI's GPT-4, citing potential risks to society.

According to a recent report in the Independent, Musk is secretly working on an AI project at Twitter. The report also stated that he has hired two researchers from the AI research firm DeepMind and has invested in 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs). Musk's project involves creating a large language model like those used in other generative AI systems such as OpenAI's ChatGPT.

It is worth noting that Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI but left the company in 2018. He has since criticised the firm's "move away from its founding principles."

Business Insider also reported that Musk has secured thousands of GPUs, which are essential for high-powered computing tasks such as AI and high-end graphics.

Musk's interest in AI is not new. He has previously spoken about his concerns that the technology could pose an existential threat to humanity. In a 2018 interview, he said, "I am really quite close, I am very close, to the cutting edge in AI and it scares the hell out of me. It's capable of vastly more than almost anyone knows, and the rate of improvement is exponential."
