ByteDance-owned video-sharing platform TikTok has handed pink slips to the entire workforce in India. Nearly 40 people, who were working for overseas markets like Brazil and Dubai, have been impacted by this decision.

"We have decided to close our India remote sales support hub, which was put in place at the end of 2020 to provide support to our global and regional sales teams. We greatly appreciate these employees and their impact on our company and will ensure they are supported at this difficult time," a TikTok spokesperson said.

According to a report by The Economic Times, the company will provide severance pay for up to three months to the impacted employees.

“The TikTok India employees were told that February 28 would be their last day and were given feelers to look out for other opportunities for some time as it was conveyed that restarting India operations were not going to take off because of the government's stance on Chinese apps,” a TikTok spokesperson told ET.

Global layoffs have been a subject of discussion since 2022. According to a Mint report, nearly 1,50,000 lost their jobs in the global tech space. Big tech players like Facebook and Twitter were seen to cut down the numbers of employees, fearing recession. After the acrimonious takeover by the maverick billionaire, Twitter laid off 7,500 employees. Meta also cut down its bandwidth by 13 per cent.

The layoff saga continues this year also. The year started with Amazon hitting the news headlines after announcing the layoffs of 18,000 employees. The e-commerce major was followed by Google and Microsoft, which fired 12,000 and 10,000 staff, respectively.
