PhonePe has launched a unified payments interface (UPI) payment option for international payments. This feature will allow Phone users in India to pay foreign merchants using UPI while traveling abroad.

At present, international merchant outlets in United Arab Emirates (UAE), Singapore, Mauritius, Nepal and Bhutan will be covered in UPI international feature.

“Over the past six years, all over India, we have been lucky to experience the UPI payments revolution transforming our daily lives. UPI international is the first major step in letting the rest of the world experience UPI too,” highlighted Rahul Chari, co-founder and chief technology officer (CTO) of PhonePe.

"The launch of this feature will prove to be a “gamechanger" and will “completely transform the way Indians traveling overseas pay at merchant outlets abroad,” he added.

PhonePe users can use the new feature by activating their UPI-linked bank account for UPI international either before taking their international trip or at merchant locations via the PhonePe app.

The transaction flow is said to be secure and will require the customer to enter their UPI pin in order to activate the service.

UPI international is the first major step in letting the rest of the world experience UPI too. I am sure this launch will prove to be a game-changer and will completely transform the way Indians travelling overseas pay at merchant outlets abroad. PhonePe has always prided itself in being the first TPAP to take new UPI features to the market, and this time is no different”, said Chari in a media statement.
