Food tech unicorn Zomato's co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Deepinder Goyal had turned a delivery agent for a brief period on new year's eve (NYE) as the company witnessed a rapid surge in orders. His first order needed to be delivered to the Zomato office.

Goyal also claimed that Zomato delivered more orders on the NYE than in its first three operational years.

"Fun fact: orders delivered today are greater than the sum of all orders delivered in the first three years of our food delivery service," he wrote on Twitter.

Goyal was seen sharing some glimpses of the Zomato office on the NYE on his Instagram.  Considering the rush, it had an undisrupted supply of energy drinks for the employees.

Swiggy and Zomato, both food tech unicorns recorded a rapid increase in orders on the NYE. According to the PTI data, Swiggy delivered more than 3.5 lakh biryani and 2.5 lakh pizza orders.

Cloud kitchens also saw a surge in orders. According to an Economic Times (ET) report, Restaurants and cloud kitchens witnessed a 30-35 per cent increase in total order volume. Grocery platforms like Instamart and Blinkit also reported a 3x jump in orders.

NKP Empire Ventures, the Bengaluru-based restaurant chain operator, posed a 30-35 per cent surge. On the other hand, Fresh Menu, another cloud kitchen brand, registered an upsurge of 30 per cent.

“There were no disruptions and orders were accepted and delivered smoothly. There was no delivery workforce shortage last (Saturday) night,” Shaqir Haq, the CEO of NKP, told ET.

“The jump was also because there were Covid-related restrictions last year, which was not the case this year," Rashmi Daga claimed.
